Guild Wars 2 Playable Races PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 22 March 2009 13:11

In comparison to the vanilla Guild Wars series, Guild Wars 2 will feature various playable races to choose from. This article contains a brief overview of those new races based on what is currently known about them upon this time of writing.

Humans
Humans are the only playable race in the vanilla Guild Wars series. Although the are predominantly present in the vanilla series, their strength and power as a race has been diminished in Guild Wars 2. For example, the kingdom of Ascalon will have fallen in Guild Wars 2, with the remaining Ascalonians fleeing for Kryta and the last Ascalonian Vanguard stronghold. It is believed however that the human race will be considered "diminishing in strength and power" storywise, not necessarily gamewise - logically due to balance issues.

CharrCharr
The mortal enemies of the Ascalonians in Guild Wars Prophecies and Guild Wars: Eye Of The North. In the beginning of the Guild Wars saga, the Charr used to worship the Titans as their gods. This Titan worshipping was forced upon them by the Charr Shaman caste - in order for this caste to remain in power and unite the various Charr warbands. Throughout various points in the Guild Wars saga, it is revealed to the Charr that the Titans are no gods at all. Instead, the Titans used the Charr to have the kingdom of Ascalon destroyed - it is suspected that Abaddon or another evil deity has something to do with this.

After the Titans have been proven not to be gods, the Charr turn to the Destroyers in Guild Wars: Eye Of The North as their new gods. Ironically, the Destroyers turn the Charr at the end of the game. With the Charr society crumbling apart due to these disappointments in their choice of religion, the Charr have concluded that there are no gods dedicated to the Charr. And so they will become a playable race in Guild Wars 2: having destroyed and occupied the former kingdom of Ascalon, and no gods to lead them.

NornNorn
The Norn race is said to be closely related to the Human race. Although they are far taller than the average human, they resemble a Viking-like culture. In Guild Wars: Eye Of The North, they live in the far northern areas of the Shiverpeaks as hunters. Unlike Humans however, they do not obey to a central government or king. The Norn will be one of the playable races in Guild Wars 2, carving out their own place in the world.

Asura
Although very short creatures, these are highly intelligent and arrogant as such. They used to reside in extended tunnel networks connecting all of Tyria. But as the Great Destroyer began to send his agents up towards the surface, the Asura were forced to relocate to this very same surface. Unlike other races, the Asura generally do not choose sides in wars. Instead, they vigorously guard their extended tunnel network and utilize it for trade purposes between the nations - thus cutting themselves into a handsome profit without getting their own hands dirty. Because the other races are basically constantly fighting each other, the Asura believe they are elevated above the other races: the taller beings on the planet are there to serve the Asura.

SylvariSylvari
Coming from the Latin "Silva" meaning "forest", the Sylvari were born on a peaceful island known as Ventari's Sanctuary. There, isolated from all the other races who occupy themselves with fighting each other, the Sylvari developed into a young race of nature spirits. Currently, it is unknown whether the Sylvari will have both male and female playable characters as the current lore persists in referring to "she" when mentioning Sylvari.

A Letter To Our Fans PDF Print E-mail

A message from Mike O'Brien from GuildWars.com:

"To our fans,

There have been some published rumors over the past few days about Guild Wars 2 delays, and I'm writing you today to set the record straight.

You've all seen announcements about restructuring at NCsoft West, and it's natural to wonder whether that restructuring impacts ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2 development. In fact, the reason NCsoft West is restructuring itself is so that the company can put all of its focus into its top-tier games like Guild Wars 2. Our team continues to grow, and has the strong support and financial backing we need to achieve our goal of making Guild Wars 2 the best online role-playing game ever created.

On Friday, NCsoft released investor materials that showed a very broad release window for Guild Wars 2, with the explanation that release timing is still "to be announced." ArenaNet has never given a release date for Guild Wars 2 other than "when it's done." NCsoft's investor materials are a reflection of that philosophy.

I know some fans had hoped for a smaller gap between the launch of Guild Wars: Eye of the North and the start of beta testing for Guild Wars 2, but we communicated last summer that it would be some time before we could commit to any beta or launch dates. Guild Wars 2 is a large and ambitious game, and we're going to take the time to do it right.

I'm immensely proud of what our team has accomplished and continues to accomplish with the development of Guild Wars 2. We'll have a lot more to say when we're closer to release. Until then, we thank you for your continued interest and ask you to stay tuned.

Mike O'Brien"

Some Legio Romana guild members found it necessary to analyze the above broadcast a bit more critically. We approached some people who also work in the software development industry - including a few direct family members of some of our respected guild members or those guild members themselves. We shall however limit ourselves to the underlined parts of the text based on the feedback we got from those software developers. Prepare to be entertained!

  • "some published rumours"
This of course refers to the warning message we already announced earlier on Legio Romana guild website regarding upcoming scamming methods of websites claiming to have free beta keys for Guild Wars 2.
  • "strong support and financial backing"
In other words, the Guild Wars 2 project appears to have become more expensive than the account managers have initially calculated at NCSoft.
  • "ArenaNet has never given a release date for Guid Wars 2 other than "when it's done."
The rumours of Guild Wars 2 being released between the end of 2008 and the first half of 2009 have to come from somewhere. Be it experience from software developers to estimate such release dates or mere speculation. The assumption is however that the Guild Wars 2 project is simply delayed. But as NCSoft remains a professional company, they will never admit such thing in public.
  • "Guild Wars 2 is a large and ambitous game"
Read the fine print closely here: Guid Wars 2 has become a technical state-of-the-art game, thus requiring more hours of labor than initially scheduled. With that, our previous point has been confirmed as well.
All in all, the Guild Wars community is looking forward to the sequal, being Guild Wars 2. Yours truly included. We will keep you updated as more news comes available.

Guild Wars 2: Introduction PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 February 2009 21:27
Guild Wars 2Guild Wars 2 is the anticipated sequel to the Guild Wars series. What is currently known is that it will be an improvement on many facets of gameplay. Guild Wars 2 takes the player 250 years further in time. Meanwhile, the human race has declined, other races (Sylvari, Asura, Charr and Norn) have taken over large areas of the continent once known as Tyria to man. One of the improvements over the vanilla Guild Wars series is that those new races are actually playable, so Guild Wars players do not have to be human de facto. As with the current Guild Wars formula, the game will be free of monthly charges.

Beta testing and scams
At the time of this writing, speculation states that the actual beta testing of Guild Wars 2 is to take place somewhere in the first half of 2009. The initial announcement was that beta testing was to take place end of 2008, but as the product was far from ready it has been delayed. The official Guild Wars website has issued a warning that there are currently bogus websites around claiming to have access keys to a Guild Wars 2 beta. As Legio Romana cares for the community, we repeat the core of the message here: there are NO beta keys unless announced on the official Guild Wars website!

Ongoing development
Site administrators of Legio Romana will continue to add articles on a regular basis to this section of the website whenever news becomes available. So be sure to check back once in a while!
